Changing of the Guard

Under faint stars seen among the light pollution-filled sky, an eastbound CPKC grain train rolls through Niles Jct, just a few miles west of Downtown Houston. Niles Junction is one of the last holdouts of SP searchlights in the Houston area, though the stalwart H2 signals here aren't long for this world. Replacement Vaders have been standing for several months and could be cut over any day now (cutover eventually occurred in June 2025).

And much like the railroad signals, Houston's First Ward neighborhood is also undergoing change. Now with areas branded as Sawyer Yards and Sawyer Heights, many former industrial buildings are being replaced by new apartments, restaurants, and grocery stores. This, on the whole, is a good thing, but it makes for stark differences in seeing an aging brick warehouse next to soon-to-be-completed multifamily construction.
