Westbound at Sawyer Yards

Houston's 1st Ward, just west of Downtown, is a formerly warehouse-heavy industrial district. However, as the logistics of commerce and the needs of housing have changed, little heavy industry takes place here anymore. Instead, this area has become an arts district and many of the former warehouses now house studios. This includes a still-standing former rice elevator of Mahatma Rice, now called "The Silos".

Another nod to the area's industrial past can be seen many times a day as the Freight Main of UP's Houston Sub still runs right past the art studios. Here, a UP manifest heads west and prepares to cross Sawyer St, which gave the district it's new name: Sawyer Yards.
