What Once Was Tower 13

The interlocking known as Tower 13 once protected the west Houston crossing of SP's Houston to Dallas main with the MKT's Houston to Midwest main. It hosted a manned tower, opened in 1903, until the interlocker's control was taken over by nearby Tower 26 in 1966. The tower was demolished in the following years, and UP eventually took over everything here at Eureka. The MKT main was abandoned west of Houston in 1997, though the diamond was kept to access The Katy's Eureka Yard.

Jump forward to 2021, and a roadway widening under the junction has brought about a track reconfiguration. The diamond and Tower 13 station sign now sit alone among construction debris and supplies as the yard lead has been moved to tie into the beginning of the Eureka Sub in the distance. Soon, the last trace of Tower 13 will be lost to time.
