The current global youth movement is about culture. Culture, has become a word with the most rapidly changing nature. People use the word Culture to define so many things that they can’t explain. We often refer to Hip-Hop as a culture. If that is to ever be true, some of us must find it necessary to draw lessons from the Music and teach the relevance to the younger generations. If that is to ever be true, we must find away to instill some real principles and not the passed down, “code of the street” bulls***, that continues to kill the communities that we occupy.
This thing we call Hip-Hop is one of the greatest forms of art ever created. Just like many great art forms, the true history of the art is being erased as new history is being written. It all started in 1973 in the Bronx, and since then certain songs, certain eras, have shaped what we refer to today, as Hip-Hop culture. The current generation doesn’t understand the relevance of the music that came before [them]. This is the first generation where that is abundantly evident. In the 90’s if you considered yourself a “true-head” you knew the importance and most likely, the lyrics to artists of the 80’s like Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Kool Moe Dee, Dougie Fresh, Big Daddy Kane. We all know that the game has become ridiculously commercial, but the “true-heads” of today don’t recognize underground Hip-Hop from the 90’s. Most fans have no idea who Das EFX is when you play them, cats look at you like an alien if you play Showbiz &AG, play a gem like Casual, and usually people just give you a long blank stare.
So we are going to give you some music, and some knowledge, so you can understand the history of the lifestyle and culture that WE represent. To give the people who truly love this s*** a chance to overstand.
Wow! Hip-Hop is old enough to have a generation gap……
