LEGO Republic F-105 Thunderchief MOC
Hey guys, Jack here again, and this time I'm here with my custom LEGO model of a Republic F-105 Thunderchief!
This jet was introduced to the USAF in 1958, but later variants actually lasted through the Vietnam War and beyond. This particular livery represents an F-105D assigned to the 388th tactical fighter wing and 44th tactical fighter squadron during the conflict. Though the real jet retained an integrated bomb bay to secure nuclear weapons, I could not find a way to include that at this challenging scale of ~1:50th - ~1:53rd, without providing detriment to the sleekness and contour the aircraft sported. I also could not make the landing gear doors fold out properly at the forward gear without wrecking the pointed design for the nose. This scale forced me to make many compromises, but I was happy to challenge myself nonetheless, and somehow fit a minifigure in the cockpit seat! The landing gear does retract regardless, getting from the designated points 'A' and 'B' quite smoothly. The canopy does indeed open, and many of the decals (besides the USAF insignia on the aft sides, which was from Brickmania) are custom done by myself. Overall, I'm happy I was able to build such a fascinating jet and a challenging scale like this. But, let me know your thoughts, by all means. Comments, faves, and constructive critiques, as always, are highly appreciated!
