HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!
The ancient Egyptians were some of the greatest lovers on earth. They loved life and the afterlife; Mother Nature in all her manifestations, their families, the multitude of gods and goddesses and the creatures associated with them… the list is endless! I’ve compiled a few love poems and lines that reflect various facets. ~ AB
"I gaze at my heart's desire,
As she stands facing me!
My sister has come, my heart exults,
My arms spread out to embrace her;
My heart bounds in its place,
Like the red fish in its pond.
O night, be mine forever,
Now that my queen has come!"
[Ancient Egyptian Literature—A Book of Readings, Volume II: The New Kingdom, translated by Miriam Lichtheim - Page 193. The University of California Press, Berkeley, California, 1976]
".... your hand is in my hand
My body shakes with joy
My heart is so happy
Because we walk together
To hear your voice is pomegranate wine to me:
I draw life from hearing it.
Could I see you with every glance,
It would be better for me
Than to eat or to drink."
— The Flower Song (Excerpt)
Written during Egypt’s New Kingdom (1539-1075 B.C.) but likely composed much earlie
