Ever since 1985, the global programme of immunization and the coverage status of BCG vaccination in India has been very good, although it is still disappointing in the eastern states. Though the BCG vaccination cannot prevent natural tuberculosis infection of the lungs, it reduces the hematogenous complications of primary infection.
The various facts about the severity of the disease are stated below:-
1. Tuberculosis is a major global public health problem with around 8 million pulmonary tuberculosis added newly in the world every year and over 2.89 million of death.
2. In India, there were 15 million cases of pulmonary tuberculosis; of this 25 % were sputum positive, which is a serious threat of spreading the infection to children.
3. Out of the 4 million infectious patients, more than 1 million is considered as chronic who have been partly treated.
4. BCG vaccination covered 90% in the urban areas and 84.7% in the rural areas.
