“Cascades in a Canopy of Gold”
This was the first image I captured on a recent outing to Dawson Brook Falls and honestly, not a bad way to kick things off, if I do say so myself.
I had originally planned to shoot mostly in black and white for my latest video, but the warm morning glow filtering through the canopy above the cascading falls was too beautiful to strip of its colour. Some scenes just demand to be seen in full.
The water flow that morning felt just right—not so forceful that it turned into a blur of white, but steady enough to maintain texture as it danced over the rocks. Since the falls are tucked away in the woods and the light was still relatively low, I was able to achieve a long exposure using just a narrow aperture and a circular polarizer. The polarizer also did a great job of cutting specular highlights off the wet rocks, giving the whole scene a more moody feel.
