7 0f 52 In memory of Thomas
I have been visiting Bosham on and off over the last 50 or so years. This gravestone has always caught my attention but it was only last Friday that the clarity of the light, the angle of the sun, and my patience came together to let me see the detail. The inscription reads In memory of Thomas son of Richard and Ann Barrow, Master of the sloop Two Brothers who by the breaking of the horse fell into the sea and drown'd October the 13th 1759 aged 23.
It sparked my curiosity, I looked this up and I learned that the Horse was part of the rigging which helped seamen go out to tend the sails.
Now I can see Thomas Barrow falling into the sea (how could I have missed that), the foresail that presumably he was going to attend to, in tatters, and the tail of the fish on the right. What admiration for the stone carver who captured all this 260 years ago - and respect for Thomas Barrow.
