Samson The Hot Tub Bear
Monrovia’s favorite bear reached celebrity status when the news media and word of mouth told his story. When younger he roamed the local mountains living a normal bear life. Like many of us he grew older and life became more difficult. Garbage and a hot tub provided the easy life. His tired old bones were soothed by the warm water. Attempts were made to stop his Hot Tub visits. Sadly he ingested a plastic bag and became ill. Samson was a “Garbage” bear and no longer could be released in to the wild. Talk was that he had to be destroyed. Monrovians and the public rallied to his support. He was saved, but where would he go? Forest DeSpain director of the Orange County Zoo built an enclosure complete with a Hot Tub. Samson enjoyed his last days. He passed on to the Great Hot Tub in the sky on May 14, 2001
