Loch an Eilein and part of the Rothiemurchus Forest

Loch an Eilein is a freshwater loch in the Rothiemurchus Forest about 3 miles (5 km) south of Aviemore, in the Scottish Highlands.

There's a small island on the loch, on which a castle was built in either the 13th/14th or 15th century, depending on which account you read! In more recent times the ruins of the castle featured as the island graveyard in series 1 of BBC TV’s ‘Monarch of the Glen’.

There's a popular 3 mile path round the loch which sits in the shadow of the Cairngorm mountains. In 2010 the loch was voted Britain’s Favourite Picnic Spot.

The area near the loch is popular with birdwatchers and (according to Wikipedia) crested tit, redstart, spotted flycatcher, tree pipit, red-throated diver, common sandpiper, whinchat, and the occasional merlin can be seen.
