Maspalomas sand dunes

At the South of the Canary Island of Gran Canaria lie the dunes of Maspalomas. They cover an area of approx 0.8 by 1.6 miles (1.2 by 2.4 Kilometers) and 1000 acres (404 Hectares) and are the No 1 tourist attraction on the island.

It's thought they were formed during the last ice Age and today thousands of visitors come to view the extensive area of sand. Although the dunes have been a protected area for well over 100 years it's OK to go and walk on parts of them and you can even have a ride on a camel, for a price. The sea in the distance is the Atlantic ocean.

In my picture there is an optical illusion. The man with the striped shirt looks tiny compared to the man in the foreground, where in fact he is standing several feet ahead. Similarly the lady with the dark blue top to his right is further ahead still. Just to complete the getting-smaller theme the lady in the sand completes the sequence!

On the extreme right, just below the horizon there are five people walking on the dunes. See how small they seem, illustrating how far it is over the dunes to the sea.
