The Galatic Center

Some of the darkest skies in Maryland can be found on Assateague Island National Seashore. This narrow barrier island is located south of Ocean City, MD and north of Wallops Island, VA. This is my favorite location to enjoy the night sky.

The light dome seen along the horizon, is due to a motion sensor light located at an air filling station. During the summer months, this light is triggered more often as trucks and SUVs come on and off the beach. Although I took other images without the light dome, I liked the silhouettes it created.

The above image is a single exposure taken with a Tamron SP 20-40mm f/2.7-3.5 at 20mm and f/4. The foreground is softened due to tracking during the 2min exposure.

Image stretched using a color preserving method - seems to work pretty well. Processing done in Affinity Photo.
