Flycatcher Spotted 906 Holy Island 2209
Last week I had a day of flycatchers and warblers at the tail end of a good autumn fall on Holy Island. It perhaps takes photographing to really appreciate the difference between Pied and Spotted Flycatchers.
Pied Flycatchers rarely keep still for more than a couple of seconds - wing and tail flicking, twisting their head this way and that, moving from branch to branch looking for a perfect perch and, of course, flitting out to catch a fly.
By contrast the larger Spotted Flycatcher can sit for a minute or two only occasionally raising its tail or turning its head before it departs like a bullet after an unwary fly.
These two birds were in the same patch of willows that was shared by the Icterine & Willow Warblers
