Grass snake (Natrix helvetica) 2020-08-29. Parc Slip, Aberkenfig, South Wales

Another very fortunate capture as the sun appeared from behind the clouds. I managed to obtain a few images from about 4.5 metres away as it paused in the water. Ever so thankful for giving me just enough precious time before continuing its swim across the pond.

Grass snakes are non venomous and are found throughout most of Wales and England but not in Scotland or Ireland. They are not easy to find, are very shy and will quickly retreat if disturbed. A fully grown adult can reach a length of about 1.5 metres. They are excellent swimmers and feed on frogs, toads, newts and occasionally small fish and mammals. It is egg laying and only a small number of young reach adulthood as they are subject to predators such as birds of prey. A full lifespan can vary between 15 to 20 years or so.
