1/24 Scale Supermarine Spitfire Mk Ia
The old 1/24 scale MPC kit. This kit was originally released in 1970 by Airfix, but was also licensed out to MPC in 1971.
The Airfix/MPC 1/24 Spitfire kit is 55 years old. The molding and fit are problematic, and require a lot of cutting, as well as significant gap-filling and sanding. The original kit decals were unusable, so I had to cut and use decals from a variety of sources, including Techmod, SuperScale lettering, scrap, and extra decaling that originally came from a Trumpeter 1/24 scale Hawker Hurricane.
This model depicts airplane KL-A X4650 of 54 Squadron, Catterick, flown by Pilot Sergeant Howard Squire. The plane actually never saw battle, because it collided with another Spitfire (KL-B, flown by Flight Comnander Alan Deere) during a training exercise. Both pilots survived, but KL-A X4650 crashed into the River Leven. It was discovered in the river in 1976 and restored, and is now active at Duxford, England.
