Fifi by the Gardens
While visiting the Garden of the Gods during my Colorado vacation Labor Day weekend, I got quite the surprise. While I’m walking through the park scouting for photo angles, a unique sound began to emerge. Being the nerd/loser (whatever term you feel is necessary) I am, I immediately thought “That’s a radial engine... multiple radial engines.” Now on high alert because there are very few things that make that kind of noise, I’m now looking like a mad man towards the sky trying to figure out what exactly it is. Upon finally showing itself, I immediately start acting like a fan girl because to my surprise, the Commemorative Air Force had sent their Boeing B-29 Superfortress “FIFI” (tail number N529B) to Colorado Springs along with the Diamond Lil (LB-30/B-24A Liberator; tail number N24927) for the weekend for display & flights the public could pay to ride on. Having never seen one of these in flight before & with only 2 in flyable condition worldwide (only 22 out of nearly 4,000 made are left), this appearance undoubtedly made my Labor Day for this year. 9-6-21
