Tired, but Reliable
We find ourselves on a cold, late winter day in 1951 and a tired and worn out Southern Railway Consolidation leads a passenger local on a unknown line as snow flurries began to fall, although it's likely somewhere in Eastern Tennessee or Western North Carolina. The transition from steam is well under way on the Southern, but this 2-8-0 is still soldiering on despite close to 50 years of heavy use and poor maintenance towards the end of its days on the Southern with the knowledge among train and maintenance crews that the end of steam is on the horizon. Never the less, the engine soldiers on, continuing its duties of fulfilling the slogan of the Southern Railway, "The Southern Serves the South."
Back in the world of reality, it's March 11, 2017 and Southern 630, now owned by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, leads the 2:25pm Missionary Ridge Local back to Grand Junction from East Chattanooga as snow flurries began to fall on this very cold day. Despite its appearance on this particular day, it is very much in good condition under the very capable hands of the men & women of TVRM with many more years of use to come, continuing to fulfill the slogan of the Southern for the enjoyment of the men, women and children of the South. 3-11-17
