Frosted Elfin (Callophrys irus) Worcester County, Maryland

Frosted Elfin is considered endangered in Maryland with an S1 status (highly state rare) and also Globally very rare with a G3 rank.

 

This butterfly dwells in habitats of sunny savannas and pine barrens that rely on regular occurrence of fire or some form of human intervention to prevent the overgrowth by trees. Preservation of habitat as well as the protection of the preferred host plant, the Sundial Lupine (Lupinus perennis) is crucial to the preservation of this rare butterfly.
