Leading the way

After a very dry summer, it was surprising to see so many butterflies at the U.S. National Arboretum on November 8th.

With no other blooms around and with the sun fading in late afternoon, the butterflies and other pollinators concentrated their frenetic activity on this small chrysanthemum patch.

Leading the butterfly train is White M Hairstreak with a gash in the hindwing that reveals some of the brilliant iridescent blue on top of the wings (that's usually not seen). The other two are female Sachem, and male Fiery Skipper.
