Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) U.S. National Arboretum, Washington DC

This long-range migrant stopped to savor these blossoms on her southbound route to southwestern United States and western Mexico.

 

This species has been rare in the last two to three years with only two sightings this year. My first sighting was on August 29th, also at the U.S. National Arboretum.
