Rising to the Sun

Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) is a woodland spring ephemeral in the Poppy Family. As other members of this family, the bloom lasts only a brief time after rising from the ground cuddled by a single leaf. This fragile plant opens its white bloom in full sun and closes it at night.

From Latin sanguinarius means bleeding. The plant bleeds red juice from its underground stem. Native Americans used it as a die for clothing, baskets, and as insect repellent and treatment for fever and other ailments.

Happy Spring and Happy Easter to all my Flickr friends and supporters!
