About 5 km is the Promenade in Thessaloniki, next to the White Tower and Alexander the Great (statue) you will meet the Umprellas.
One of the most famous sculpture in Thessaloniki is the famous 13m-high, stainless steel sculpture titled “Umbrellas” on the waterfront.
Umbrellas are actually one of the most photographed sculptures around the world.
The sculpture was designed by the late Greek sculptor George Zongolopoulos who exhibited the Umbrellas for the first time on the celebration of the 45th Venice Biennale.
The sculpture was mounted on a floating platform at the entrance of the exhibition and received remarkable publicity internationally.
Zongolopoulos felt particularly honored with the installation of the Umbrellas in Thessaloniki in 1997, the year that the city was the European Capital of Culture.
