Springfield A5 Radial Aircraft Engine for Model Airplanes by Roy McAdams, 1930

The engine was fabricated with a drill press, lathe, and possibly a shaper and finished by hand. The crankcase and gearcase are aluminum, cylinders are steel, and the heads are cast iron. The small copper tube (with loop) from the oil tank at the bottom feeds oil to the pressure pump while the large copper tube returns oil to the tank from the scavenge pump. McAdams used the Bosch mini plugs, however, he removed one of the two ground electrodes. Ignition was provided by an American Bosch coil and a 6V Western Auto dry cell battery. See photos of our other Springfield engines including one of this engine running in 1930.
