Dooling 61 and a Vintage Model Airplane Engine 6.3 Cu In (103cc) Builder Unknown, Date Unknown

This early model airplane engine stands 12 inches tall by 8 inches long and weighs 7.5 pounds. It was designed to burn a gas/oil mixture on spark ignition. It incorporates a stepped piston with two diameters; the upper portion for the combustion chamber is 2 inches in diameter and the lower portion for the crankcase pressure is 2.75 inches diameter. There are 2 steel rings on the upper diameter and one ring on the lower diameter and all rings run directly on the aluminum cylinder. The stroke is 2 inches making it 6.3 cu. in. total volume and it swings a 23.5 inch cast aluminum propeller. It has an adjustable timer assembly located behind the propeller and a horizontally mounted carburetor and front rotor induction. Note the full size spark plug and the lack of holes in the tapered mounting flange. The piston and cylinder indicate attempts to start the engine and possibly a short run in time. There is no identification on the engine and all of the machining was done on a lathe.
