Woodlouse (Oniscidea)

Woodlice are land-dwelling crustaceans that belong to the order Isopoda, which also includes shrimp and crabs. Woodlice consume and accumulate heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury from the soil. This process helps to detoxify the soil and prevent the metals from spreading to plants and groundwater. They store these metals in their bodies, often crystallizing them in their gut, and for this reason, they are used by scientists as bioindicators to measure soil contamination levels
