Around Chiswick Works

RM 2079 in the early stages of a controlled slide on 12 November 1979. Two RT`s were kept as `Skid Buses` and used fairly routinely but almost always used for `dramatic effect` when required for the camera. By the early 1980`s, RM`s and RMC`s became the usual vehicles - some of them for just a short time as this one. Others such as 1041, 1470, 1518 and 1740 lasted much longer and had special tyres for this work. I don`t ever recall seeing an RCL or RML on the skid pan.

 

The water jets were situated just to the offside of the bus track. A weak detergent was added to make the surface a little more challenging though the specific purpose was to achieve a controlled stop within the painted yellow box - and to not over-run into the wall of the Training School building. And, yes, it happened....
