LT/LCBS Bus Garages

Back in the days of the LT that so many of us remember with fondness, it just seemed so logical for a bus garage to be situated on line of route to easily facilitate crew changeovers. Now not only are proper undercover bus garages with facilities for staff becoming a thing of the past, the trend for industrial estate premises remote from passing bus routes adds to the cost of positioning staff and vehicles. And causes vehicles to be stranded/abandoned when a crew change goes wrong.

Here on 7 April 1982, the driver of RP 11 looks to be preparing to leave the bus directly outside St. Albans Garage. A scenario replicated outside the vast majority of LT/LCBS bus garages at that time - but not for much longer. Deregulation in 1986 and the asset stripping that went with it soon created a `normal` situation to not have bus premises on line of route.
