The Natural Gas experiment is over and 7149 on its way to the new owner Norfolk Southern.
The U.S. was importing the vast majority of diesel fuel and natural gas was plentiful and easily available.
Two locomotives were converted in 1992 to run with both refrigerated compressed liquid methane in a special tender and diesel fuel. Extra cooling required the SD45 style cooling fans. Both designated DF40-2, the DF for duel fuel.
