It is the smallest and stockiest of the grebes. It is immediately identifiable by its small round head, its small thin beak with often visible pale corners and its inimitable way of floating like a cork, the back of the body truncated. During the nuptial period, the Little Grebe can be recognized by its cheeks, its throat and its reddish-brown foreneck contrasting with the rest of the dark brown plumage and the pale yellow spot that marks the corner of the beak.
It migrates south at the end of the summer, more generally, only populations nesting in areas where the water freezes in winter are migratory./

En période nuptiale, le castagneux se reconnaît à ses joues, sa gorge et son avant du cou brun-roux contrastant avec le reste du plumage brun sombre et la tache jaune pâle qui marque la commissure du bec.
Il migre vers le sud à la fin de l’été, de façon plus générale, seules les populations nichant dans les zones où l’eau gèle en hiver sont migratrices./
