Grande tortue, Vanesse de l'orme (Nymphalis polychloros), le même un grand mâle, au soleil, ailes ouvertes,....Large tortoise, Vanesse de l'elm (Nymphalis polychloros), the same a large male, in the sun, wings open

I have never photographed such a large subject...! and above all I never had the chance to photograph it in the shade and then in the sun..!

it is medium to large in size, its ragged-edged wings have rufous uppersides edged in dark brown and punctuated with black and yellow spots. The dark border of the hind wings is decorated with dark blue lunules. Their reverse is grayish brown. There is no sexual dimorphism,

its host plants are elm, willow, poplar, aspen, hazel, apple, pear, other hardwoods.

Present from northern Africa to central and southern Europe, Asia Minor and central Asia, is migratory in the north of its range, i.e. in Denmark and southern Sweden , Norway and Finland.

it is also fond of sap flows from injured trees.
