Hoopoe

Upupa epops - Eurasian Hoopoe

Summer visitor (April to September), a much more abundant species south of the Loire than in the north. winters to the south of the Sahara.

Precious predator: feeds mainly on beetle larvae, grasshoppers, locusts, butterflies, flies, spiders, worms, slugs, millipedes. She searches the smallest gaps in the bark, probes the grass on the slopes in search of the larvae of the chafer, the stag beetle or the mole cricket.

Its longevity is about 11 years, measuring from 26 to 32 cm in length (beak: from 5 to 6 cm) for a wingspan of about 45 cm and a mass of 60 to 80 g.

The Hoopoe has enjoyed full protection on French territory since 1981
