Entry for Tansy’s Writing Contest 2018
“Daddy, I’m scared” said Joseph as we walked along the ever lasting hallway. “I know you are, but your a brave boy. You can do this!” I don’t know where we are. I don’t know how we got here. All I know is that we’re in a nightmare.
We were walking for hours, maybe even days. I’ve lost track. You always seem to lose a sense of time when it’s not in your face for the entire day. My life has always been full of schedules and calendars. Not having a sense of time worried me. I had always thought “Will I be late for this”, or “do I have time for that. In here, time goes away.
*As we walk along the corridor, if you could even call it that, it starts to shake. Not the entire hall, but only a small portion. “Daddy, what was that?” Joseph said as tears started to develop in his eyes. “Shhhh, get against the wall” I said, and I blew out my match. I took Joseph and got against the wall. It was moist and wet. Darkness. The rumbling began to come closer. Closer and closer. Until it finally reached us. It stopped. I could hear it breathing, whatever it was. Joseph let a small shriek. I didn’t know for sure how, but I knew the thing looked at us.
I covered Joseph’s mouth. I could feel warm tears dripping onto my hand. Step step step. It got closer. I don’t know how much, but I just knew it was closer. I fell warm breath against my face. I thought we were goners. Shriek. Something down the tube let out a shrieking noise. It wasn’t a human, but more of an animals. That’s the closest I could relate it to. I no longer felt the breath. Instead, I felt the rumble move farther back where it had originated. It was gone. I waited a minute before standing up and lighting another match. “Daddy?” I turned to look at Joseph. “Can I hold your hand?” He held his hand up toward me. I returned the gesture and held his hand. He wiped his tears on his sleeve, and we continued down the tube.
