Transportation Archaeology

A river runs through it, a 1956 Buick, 1958 Oldsmobile, 1957 Chevy (maybe convertible), and several other dinosaurs (cream-puffs) from a fast approaching bygone era of the ICE automobile and private transportation are entombed in the river bank from the great floods of Boulder county in 1969; playing a rule of thirds game along the Left Hand Creek with a newly painted 2024 Amtrak Showcase passenger special with the Colorado Governor and other prominent Amtrak and ColoRail patrons on thier way to Longmont, CO on Thursday March 7, 2024. This line hasn’t seen revenue passenger service since 1967 operated by the CB&Q, and C&S. Now an opportunity for a regional train and even a return to service between Billings, MT and Denver. The “Night Crawler“ may actually come back in the memory of that 1958 Oldsmobile entombed in the mud.

I saw someone else shoot this spot several years ago and wanted to try it when the light was right and with something outrageously flashy a perfect fit.

“ The first train to carry passengers between Denver and Longmont in decades rolled out of Union Station Thursday afternoon with Gov. Jared Polis, state lawmakers and transportation leaders on board.

“We are the inaugural passengers on Front Range Passenger Rail demo today,” Polis said, kicking off the trip from Union Station’s Platform 5. “All aboard!”

The urban sprawl gave way to farm fields, creeks and cottonwood trees as the Amtrak Superliner moved away from the city. About a half-hour in, the train merged onto freight tracks that aren't used used for passenger travel.

“This is a huge moment in my life,” said conductor Brad Swartzwelter over the loudspeakers. “I grew up in Boulder. I’ve spent my entire life watching freight trains on the line that we just joined, and I can’t tell you what an honor it is to now be the conductor of the first passenger train on the main line towards Boulder.”

The 44-mile demonstration trip to Longmont took about 90 minutes, far slower than what the train will ultimately travel when it opens to the public, according to Amtrak President Roger Harris and other transportation officials. Amtrak plans to operate along the route, which will also connect to other Amtrak routes.“
