Free the Jailed Water Charge Protesters

Photo taken 16/03/15 outside Donaghmede Shopping Centre in north county Dublin

Pictured on the poster are jailed campaigners Bernie Hughes (of Finglas), Damien O’Neill (of Coolock), Paul Moore (of Kilbarrack), and Derek Byrne (of Donaghmede).

The Irish Government set up a water utility company in 2013 replacing the service previously provided by local authorities.

From the beginnings there were widespread concerns; these centred on many issues that included data security, company responsiveness, and wasteful spending. Combined with fears that the water service would be privatised there was a public backlash. The scale of non-payment of the charges, and the volume and frequency of protests made the future of Irish Water an electoral issue in the 2016 general election.
