CYM anti water charges North Wall Quay, Dublin
sticker from Connolly Youth Movement (CYM) opposing the proposal to introduce water charges
The text states: "Our Water. Referendum NOW. Put it in the Constitution"
Fears were justified that the introduction of water charges was the first step towards privatising water in the Irish state. We only need to look at what happened in South America to see how a process begins leading to the privatisation of water
Socialists went beyond simply calling for the Water Charges to be opposed. The argument was articulated that public ownership of water supply and a right of all citizens to water as a human need should be guaranteed with an addition to Bunreacht na hEireann - the constitution of the republic.
The CYM is the youth wing of the Communist Party of Ireland
