Traditional Narrowboat and 'Butty' combination Jupiter and Saturn photographed at Rudheath on the Trent and Mersey canal, en-route from Anderton to Middlewich for a folk and boat weekend.

Both are owned by the Historic Narrowboat Club.

Jupiter (formerly Hawk) was built in 1926 by Yarwoods of Northwich for Fellows Clayton and Moreton.

Saturn is the last surviving wooden Shropshire Union “Fly-boat”, built in Chester in 1906.

Her job was to rush cheese and produce, fresh from the farms of Cheshire and Shropshire, to the markets of the industrial towns and cities, running 24 hours, day & night using a relay team of horses.

Photo taken from a bridge over the canal.

Rather than having an electric or airhorn, the helmsman blew a traditional hunting horn as a warning as they approached the bend.
