19th June 1983 : Anderton Boat Lift and Anderton Wharf.
The boat lift provides a 50-foot vertical link for narrowboats between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal.
Built in 1875, it was in use for over 100 years until it was closed in 1983 due to corrosion. Restoration started in 2001 and the boat lift was re-opened in 2002.
The coaster on the right is the Ben Veen, owned by the Isle of Man based Ramsey Shipping Company. She was one of a number of ships used for commercial traffic up the Weaver Navigation as far as Anderton at the time. Some went to the Anderton Wharf and others to the ICI Winnington Works, seen in the background.
