Entry for Small Wars 2021 'Ride it!'
Ever since he could remember, Qez Loya had been enthralled with a dusty old speeder bike kept in the shed on his parents' moisture farm. He nagged his parents for the chance to fix it up, and on his 17th Life Day, they finally relented.
The speeder, they explained, had belonged to his late grandfather. They had meant to get it repaired, but thanks to tight funds and the passage of time, the bike was gradually forgotten.
Qez spent every spare moment he had tinkering with the bike. Every credit he saved would be spent at the salvage yard for replacement parts. Finally, he got it running... sort of. There's only so much a teenager can do with secondhand parts on a desert planet. Though she breaks down from time to time, Qez couldn't imagine a happier place to be than whipping across the dunes on his very own speeder.
