Paddlewheel Graveyard

The paddle wheel graveyard is hidden among the trees and underbrush on the west bank of the Yukon River, just north of Dawson City, Yukon Territories. With the discovery of gold in the region, paddle wheelers were once a primary means of transportation.

As roads improved, the need for river travel diminished. The completion of the road to Dawson City in 1953 marked the end of the stern wheeler’s working days.

The S.S. Keno was the last stern wheeler to travel the Yukon River when it made its journey to Dawson City on August 26, 1960, where it remains today.

Other paddle wheelers were not so fortunate in their fate. Between 1903 and 1928, the Tyrrell, the Victorian, the Mary F. Graff, the Schwatka, the Seattle No.3, and the Julia B. were pushed up on the shores of the Yukon River and abandoned.
