Ernest Shackleton

Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914 its expedition ship Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and finally sank in the Weddell Sea off Antarctica. The crew escaped by camping on the sea ice. On 24 April, 1915 Shackleton, and four others began a voyage in one of the ships rowing boats, to travel, from the place where Endurance sank, through icy seas, to the island of South Georgia, a distance of eight hundred miles, and a fourteen day battle with the elements, to summon help for the other nineteen members of the crew left behind on the ice, Ernest Shackleton later made three attempts and was successful on the third occasion to rescue the stranded crew
