Hot Wheels Krazy 8s
Having learned about this month's theme for the #mocaroundgang community over on Instagram incentivized me to finally try and create a replica of a Hot Wheels design, and I almost immediately knew which one to do.
Debuting in 2001, this Phil Riehlman-designed casting depicts some sort of cross between a Group C prototype and a jet fighter, and is characterized by its massive 16-cylinder engine that takes up most of its body.
Krazy 8s was heavily featured in Hot Wheels promotional material, but it is probably most remembered for its appearance as one of the 'hero cars' in Hot Wheels: World Race, a decidedly silly animated special commemorating the brand's 35th anniversary, in which an eccentric scientist pits six teams against each other on an interdimensional race track named Highway 35, at the end of which resides an ancient artifact that can provide infinite energy. Krazy 8s is driven by Brian Kadeem, leader of the Dune Ratz, whose cars are equipped with spiked tires for traversing deep sands.
This model aims to replicate the Dune Ratz livery, for which I initially intended to make decals for, but I didn't manage to figure the required process in time. The build was decently challenging, especially around the canopy area, but owning a Krazy 8s casting in real life (not a World Race one) definitely helped. I'm especially proud of the inverted curved fender assembly I came up with.
