Moine punk
Phyang (Inde) - Aux abords du monastère de Phyang au Ladakh, j’ai photographié cet homme que j’avais pris pour un moine punk, en raison de son accoutrement baroque. Il était devant une petite épicerie où il achetait une cigarette à l’unité. Un jeune couple d’Indiens intrigué par mon matériel photo est venu me voir. Ils se sont faits interprètes pour moi auprès du vieil homme que je venais de photographier et qui ne parlait pas un mot d’anglais. Il avait été un temps moine, avant de revenir à la vie laïque. Une pratique courante chez les bouddhistes. De cette époque, il avait gardé sa tunique religieuse qui lui permettait d’entretenir le doute sur son statut, et de bénéficier des transports en commun gratuits et de la bienveillance de la population. Malin !
Punk Monk
Phyang (India) - Near the Phyang Monastery in Ladakh, I photographed this man whom I had mistaken for a punk monk, given his baroque attire. He was in front of a small grocery store where he was buying a single cigarette. A young Indian couple, intrigued by my camera equipment, came to see me. They acted as interpreters for me for the old man I had just photographed, who didn't speak a word of English. He had once been a monk before returning to secular life, a common practice among Buddhists. From that time, he had kept his religious tunic which allowed him to maintain doubts about his status, and to benefit from free public transport and the goodwill of the population. Clever!
