Action Bénarès, une ONG médicale en danger
Varanasi (Inde) - L’équipe de l’ONG Action Bénarès apporte une aide sanitaire dans les rues, les bidonvilles et les léproseries de la ville sainte. Depuis 40 ans, cette association créée par un médecin français, aujourd’hui disparu, soigne gratuitement les intouchables et tous les déshérités qui n’ont pas d’existence légale. Les soins vont du petit bobo qui en raison du manque d’hygiène a de grandes chances de se transformer en infections graves, à des pathologies très lourdes comme des nécroses sévères ou la gangrène.
Aujourd’hui, l’association médicale est en danger. Elle n’a plus d’argent. Les six professionnels de santé ne sont plus payés depuis plusieurs mois et poursuivent bénévolement leur mission. Pour combien de temps encore ? Sans médicament, pas de soins.
Devant cette situation désespérée, avec Philippe Mayor le président d’Action Bénarès, je retourne le 22 septembre en Inde, présenter la petite ONG à la présidente d’une Fondation bancaire suisse qui fait une halte à Varanasi. Ce voyage est celui de la dernière chance. La Fondation tient dans ses mains l’avenir de milliers d’invisibles dont l’existence échappe aux radars de l’Etat indien.

Action Bénarès, a medical NGO in danger
Varanasi (India) - The team from the NGO Action Bénarès provides health aid in the streets, slums and leprosariums of the holy city. For 40 years, this association created by a French doctor, now deceased, has provided free treatment to the untouchables and all the deprived who do not have a legal existence. The care ranges from minor injuries which, due to lack of hygiene, have a high chance of quickly transforming into serious infections, to very serious pathologies such as severe necrosis or gangrene.
Today, the medical association is in danger. She has no more money. The six health professionals have not been paid for several months and continue their mission on a voluntary basis. For how much longer ?
Faced with this desperate situation, with Philippe Mayor, the president of Action Bénarès, I will return to India on September 22, to present the small NGO to the president of a Swiss banking foundation who is stopping in Varanasi. This trip is one of last chance. The Foundation holds in its hands the future of thousands of invisible people whose existence escapes the radar of the Indian State.
