Soatanana (Madagascar) - généralement, je n’aime pas photographier les gens de dos. C’est rarement esthétique, mais ça démontre la plupart du temps que le photographe n’a pas osé faire face à son sujet et affronter son regard. « Timidité » que je peux comprendre, mais il faut avoir ce que l’on veut. D’autant que la plupart du temps on ne rencontre aucune hostilité si on assume son statut de photographe. Et combien même la réprobation serait-elle au rendez-vous, selon moi, mieux vaut ranger son appareil photo que de photographier sournoisement les gens de dos. A moins d’avoir une véritable intention informative ou artistique.
Cela étant dit, cette photo est l’exception qui confirme la règle que je m’impose. J’avais l’autorisation de photographier, mais aucun point de vue ne me permettait d’avoir de face les participants à la messe. Pourtant, il me fallait une photo qui mette en évidence les dimensions de cette basilique. Il ne me restait que la mezzanine située à l’arrière de l’édifice religieux. Et si ici, les gens sont de dos, ce n’est pas trop grave, car le véritable sujet est la basilique. Bien entendu j’aurais préféré les avoir de face. En photo comme en tout, à l’impossible nul n’est tenu.

It's rarely aesthetic, but it shows most of the time that the photographer didn't dare to face his subject and confront his gaze. "Shyness" I can understand, but you have to have what you want. Especially since most of the time you do not encounter any hostility if you assume your status as a photographer. And how much even reprobation would be there, in my opinion, it is better to put away your camera than to sneakily photograph people from behind. Unless you have a real informative or artistic intention.
That being said, this photo is the exception that proves the rule I apply to myself. I had the authorization to photograph, but no point of view allowed me to have face the participants in the mass. However, I needed a photo that highlights the dimensions of this basilica. I only had the mezzanine at the back of the religious building. And if there, people are from behind, it is not too serious, because the real subject is the basilica. Of course I would have preferred to have them face on. In photography as in everything, no one is bound to the impossible.
