Ils m’observaient alors que je faisais des photos à travers la fenêtre ouverte d’un bâtiment de la gare des taxis de brousse. Je les observais du coin de l’oeil en me disant que photographier ces gamins serait plus intéressant que la photo que je tentais de faire avec des voyageurs attendant leur taxi dans la pénombre. D’un geste brusque, j’ai braqué mon objectif sur eux et déclenché. Il n’ont même pas cligné de l’oeil, conservant leur attitude absente.
Ils ont commencé à s’animer lorsque je leur ai montré la photo sur l’écran de contrôle. Une petite discussion a pu s’engager. C’est comme ça que j’ai appris qu’ils apprenaient à rabattre les voyageurs vers les compagnies de taxis de brousse moyennant une petite commission sur le prix du billet.

They were watching me as I took pictures through the open window of a bush taxi station building. I watched them out of the corner of my eye, telling myself that photographing these kids would be more interesting than the photo I was trying to take with travelers waiting for their taxi in the dark. With a sudden movement, I aimed my lens at them and fired. They didn't even blink, maintaining their absent attitude.
They started to animate when I showed them the picture on the monitor screen. A small discussion was able to engage. That's how I learned that they learn to steer travelers to bush taxi companies for a small commission on the ticket price.
