Pin Oak takes a back seat to it's red and white oak cousins when it comes to woodworking, but as you can see, it makes a pretty nice platter! The dark streaking in this piece are a result of spalting. Spalting refers to fungal growth in decaying wood, thus this beautiful spalted wood is just a step away from being rotten (rest assured finishing ends that process, though). It's much more challenging to turn than more viable wood in that it doesn't cut nearly as cleanly, but the dramatic effects spalting lends to a piece are well worth the effort.
