An athletic shoe, sneaker? Or a slipper with a rubber sole?

Before rubber, shoe soles were primarily made of leather, which was stacked and stitched or nailed together, or wood, as seen in clogs and sandals, along with plant fibers and animal hide. Leather soles absorbed water and became slippery when wet, while wooden soles lacked flexibility.

The invention of vulcanized rubber by Charles Goodyear in 1839 (patented in 1844) revolutionized footwear by using heat and sulfur to create a durable, waterproof, and elastic material. While Wait Webster patented a process for cementing rubber soles to shoes in 1832, the rubber lacked durability until vulcanization made it practical. The first rubber-soled shoes were developed in the late 1800s in the United States, with Humphrey O'Sullivan producing shoes based on Goodyear's technology in 1892 and the U.S. Rubber Company (which later became Keds) introducing rubber-soled shoes that same year.

The term "sneakers" emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries because the rubber soles allowed wearers to move quietly compared to noisy leather-soled dress shoes. In 1917, the Converse Rubber Shoe Company launched the Converse All-Star, defining the modern rubberized athletic shoe. Later, in 1937, Vitale Bramani invented the first rubber lug sole (the Vibram sole) after a tragedy in the Italian Alps, creating specialized outsoles with better grip for mountaineering and sports.
