Benefits of CST for dementia patients (Infographic)

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) offers a helpful treatment for people who are experiencing the effects of mild to moderate dementia.

What is CST?

Many experts working in dementia care and treatment have recognised the positive effect of these psycho-social sessions. The CST experience is often seen to be as effective as medication. However, CST usually produces the most positive impact on participants who used it in combination with medicine.

CST is offered as a seven week therapy which provides practical and social stimulation to help reduce the harmful effects caused by dementia. This treatment is shown to benefit the quality of life and cognition while remaining cost-effective.

Benefits of CST for dementia patients:

CST offers improved cognition and quality of life

CST is shown to perform as well as some anti-dementia drugs

It is more cost-effective than some medication

The benefits can offer continued value for a period following the sessions

Participants enjoy contributing, learning and socialising

Is CST cost effective?

The therapy was evaluated as cost-effective when measured in terms of quality of life for the individuals taking part.

The most cost-effective results came from the effect on those who received anti-dementia medication in combination with CST. The effectiveness was below the £20,00 recommended by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Combining the quality of life improvements with health care costs, CST could save the NHS a net benefit of £54.9 million per year.

NICE-SCIE guidelines recommended that people who were diagnosed with mild to moderate dementia should have the opportunity to participate in a CST programme. It is currently offered by NHS trusts throughout the UK.
