Altrincham was once a terminus railway station, with train services travelling to and from Manchester and beyond via the Sale line. In 1990-1992, this railway line was converted into a tram line and is now operated by Metrolink.
Train services continue to serve Altrincham, but via an alternative route, the Manchester - Chester via Stockport line, which travels from Stockport through Cheadle Heath, Cheadle, Sharston, Bagueley and Navigation Road.
